Elijah Parish Lovejoy was an American Presbyterian minister, journalist, and abolitionist editor. He was killed by a pro-slavery mob in Alton, Illinois, and became a symbol for press freedom and the antislavery movement. His death intensified abolitionist organizing in the North.
